For these gifts, humanity will remain in perpetual debt which cannot be redeemed merely by paying homage by different means but by allowing these luminaries to affect us, catalyze us, help us remove all callousness, and sensitize us towards a new spiritual level of consciousness. The great Masters brought before humanity, for the first time, the most efficacious and practical methods of understanding ultimate verities and application of such verities/truths in their practical day-to-day life. The contribution of both masters in the field of personal development and especially in the case of the education of children is ideal for all nations. Both Swami Vivekananda and Paramahansa Yogananda were great masters of humanity. No, ordinary man, surely, is worthy of this spiritual title. But now and then there appears on earth one of the noble lineages of God-realized souls to carry out the plans of Divinity and establish righteousness on earth. Vivekananda's work prepared the ground in America and planted the seeds of Eastern spiritual values. These seeds were to be nurtured by another spiritual giant from India, Paramahansa Yogananda (1893-1952).

Calendars are created by civilizations to give meaning to the continuous flow of time according to their worldviews. The current book presents a comprehensive account of their structure and relative importance at the present time and places them in the context of other calendars prevalent outside India. Satchidananda Murty, one of modern India’s leading philosophers, passed away in his native village of Sangamjagarlamudi in Andhra Pradesh in 2011, after a stellar career during which he advanced knowledge rather than opinion. The Indian Philosophical community, and especially Ashok Vohra, is to be congratulated for producing a dynamic engagement with philosophy. I had known Murty for more than twenty years. I interacted with him several times. When I once asked him where he stood philosophically, he was candid enough to say that he ‘Oscillates between Sankar and Ramanuja’. The essays in this book amply demonstrate that he was a man of many parts but as the allusion to his mystical experiences in his book The Realm of Between reveals, he was also more than the sum of his parts; while willing to transcend the limits of reason when required. Thus ‘revelation and reason’ characterize not just the title of one of his famous books but in a sense, his life, and this fact renders this collection uniquely relevant for our times. I therefore enthusiastically recommend this book not only to all those interested in the philosophy of Professor Murty, or in Indian Philosophy, or in philosophy in general but to all those interested in contemporary philosophy in the broadest sense.

About the Author

Kotta Satchidananda Murty (1924-2011) Padma Shri and Padama Vibhushan awardee was one of the tallest philosopher spheres of his time. His writings are extensive and his influence is felt widely. His influence goes beyond academic philosophers and his long line of students. Prof. K.S. Murty was my teacher, guide, colleague and friend. We had a very close personal and professional relationship for over sixty years. I was with him during good times and not-so-good times. Clearly, he was the most important senior professional friend I ever had; and he was a major influence on me in many ways. I looked up to him for guidance and inspiration. He treated me as a part of his extended family. He shared my joy when success came my way, and he was there to comfort me in distress. Never did he hesitate to express his displeasure when I did not live up to his expectations. He expected the same from me. He was a true friend in need as well as in deed.

That we liked each other and were very fond of each other did not mean that we were alike in our personality, habits, dispositions or philosophies we subscribe to. Indeed there were striking differences between us. Prof. Murty was bluntly outspoken and brutally sarcastic whereas I am known to be somewhat circumspect. Prof. Murty enjoyed experimenting with alcoholic 'spirits,' whereas I shy away from such adventures. I am an outdoor person, enjoying sports and such; and Prof. Murty was in some ways secluded and shut out too many worldly indulgences; even though he was passionate in some he pursued them diligently. Our philosophical backgrounds and preferences were also different. He was a Vedantin in a very broad sense. I grew up in the pragmatic tradition of the Chicago school. Prof.’s Vedanta was stained with a theistic shade and submerged in significant ways in secular waters. My pragmatism is wedded to Gandhian idealism.

There is, however, something that closely held us together. It was a spiritual bond. By spiritual I mean a state of mind, an attitude and a commitment to altruist values. The spiritual mindset is one where contraries coexist without causing conflict and discomfort. It is a state of mind beyond logic and reason. Though he shared such a spiritual orientation, Prof. Murty was rigorously rational in thinking and impeccably logical in his arguments. How- ever, rational thinking and logical argument are only to clarify ideas. They do not generate new ideas. Nor do they normally have a transformational effect on the person. Creativity is deeply spiritual and is the offshoot of a different level of mental functioning. Adopting the general frames of the Vedic teachings and justifying these through the Upanisadic presentations, he resolves the suitability of the Brahmasutras of Badarayana. This is to counter the definitive issues raised against Advaita Vedanta by the opponents. The rhetoric of his teachings has a pristine beauty in that even his followers were sometimes confused over the justifications or had difficulty understanding certain concepts. Getting on to such deep analytical exegetics, the divergence of philosophical conceptions had swept over and two major schools of thought resulted- the Bhamati and the Vivarana. From an analysis of the concepts of these two schools, it can be understood that both school could not be able to determine the right utility of a major concept 'adhyasa' or superimposition adopting one of the three exhibits of adhyasa by Sankara. The fact is that the author of the Ratnaprabha seems to be very close to the original implications of Sankara who accepts 'Atasmin tadbuddhih' as adhyasa.

On this background, the author of the present book 'Adhyasa- An Analytical Exegesis on Sri Sankara' examines the analytical implications of the different concepts of adhyasa. The author fords impregnate evidence to show that there are distinctions between these three, Maya standing at the transcendental level, avidya and adhyasa at the empirical level. Though Sankara argues that such a differentiation is not easy to distinguish, for, adhyasa on the epistemic level is adhyasa from the logical angle, he admits avidya as the cause and adhyasa as the effect. It is Atmaikatva alone that informs about Adhyasa according to him.

Another argument discussed is about the concept of the 'mere appearance' of Reality. This mere appearance is the distortion of Reality. Further, an analytical discussion is taken up on admitting a three-faced nature of Reality-Brahman as Itself, as the ground of appearance and as appearance as substantive real. The next issue considered is regarding the knowledge of the Vedas. Sankara does not admit the absoluteness of the Vedas as they are revealed ones. These are absolute in the sense of mere appearance only. Finally, there is another important concern for consideration on 'Atma ca Brahma' which is not acceptable to the author also. 'Brahman as Atman' is a mere appearance.

It will be possible for the reader to have an unambiguous understanding of the views of Sri Sankara from this book and thereby direct the Vedanta into its original comprehensive exposition. It is a reflective vision of Reality which is justified through the intuitive experience within oneself. The propensity of an individual to the Truth in a state of experience and existence marks the uniqueness of this thinking. The scheme of thought initiated by sage Narayana and carried on by his so-called Guruparampara has provided the ground for even some variants of thought on Advaita such as dualism and the like. The ancient scriptures and the Upanisads which mark the intuitive experiences of the sages form the only foundational comprehensive testimonies or justifications of the nature of Truth-experience. The Advaita thinking solicited answers to the most fundamental questions on Reality such as the 'what' and 'how' - the most difficult conceptualization of Reality.

To review the philosophical concerns of man, available evidence indicates that despite the strong credentials of the ancient Advaita ground there is a clear indication of the metamorphosis of the Advaita Philosophy, in particular, the Advaita Vedanta from the ancient Vedic scheme of thought and the dogmatic Upanisadic spiritual integral visions on Truth. The Vedic discourses on the nature and content of Reality, the relational propositions on the World and the human constitution are not mere facts of primitive immature thoughts but rightly point to the highest 'knowledge'. Though the emphasis on Karma was a distinctive theoretical prejudice, pertaining to the ground of reflecting on the content of Truth, imperatively this points out to a very splendid presentation of the facts that are intuitively experienceable. It is the seers of the Upanisads who realized these Truths in flashes of light that eliminated any misunderstanding of Reality as such through the systematic process of 'Self-Realization'. The Upanisadic seers further reflecting on the necessity of extolling the Reality looked into altering the means of 'Self-Realization' changing the modes of knowing the Reality and thus admitting the relevance of 'knowledge' of the Absolute as the only means to the end.

It is significant that there is a definitive message on the necessity of understanding Reality in its knowable perversion which otherwise is beyond any perceptual premise and thereby validating the grounds for the plausibility of human transcendence through 'Self- Realization' bringing out the oneness or realization of the non-difference among human beings, God and the objective world. As far as the factual understanding of Reality and conceptual analysis is concerned, the Upanisads certainly provide a clear means to the knowledge of Reality which facilitates only a non-distinction from It. But as substantiation on the fact of philosophizing it is the Brahmasutras that bring in the systematisation of the Upanisadic thoughts but in a concise form. However, because of the difficulty in getting acquainted with the sutras misinterpretations rather than subjective ones evolved unfolding the logical inconsistencies of the arguments in these sutras. The intricacy in these sutras was fully unfolded by the great Acarya Sri Sankara who through his intuitive experience and great intellectual skill schematises the ideas of the Brahmasutras in complete conformity with the Upanisads. His endeavour marks a complete metamorphosis of the intricacies of Upanisadic thinking.

Sri Sankara, taking into reflective analysis the presentations of the philosophical validations and justifications of his Advaitic predecessors like Upavarsa, Kasakrtsna, Jaimini, Badarayana, Badari, Gaudapada etc. strives to enrich the Advaita thinking making the entire cognitive enterprise illuminatingly rational at different levels of experience. The interpretative technique and justifications, validations, clarifications and simplifications along with elucidations on potential reciprocation by opponents mark his depth of reflective knowledge and understanding of the nature of Reality. A theistic leaning of the Brahmasutras, which actually is not the case as proved by Sankara, was facilitating, cleared off its subjective prejudices through reflective interpretations and with the aid of logical reasoning, was ineffably bracketed out and the inscrutable revelations of the scriptures were recognised as the sole means to understand the Reality. Finally, it is Non-dualism or the non-distinction between the subject and object that comes to the fore. It is the identification of the individual with the Absolute Self-transcending everything originated that is aimed at the knowledge of Atmaikatva' by Sankara. Though some opponents charge that such schematics were done even before Badarayana by thinkers like Asmarathya, Kasakrtsna, Karsnajini, Badari, Audulomi or Jaimini, it can be asserted that the true philosophical compilations based on Upanisads were made by Badarayana alone in sutra form. The shades of difference in interpretations of the Upanisadic thoughts were also prevalent during the period of the orthodox philosophical systems. But such thoughts were more regularly systematized by Badarayana into the sutra literature. Sutras, the short aphorisms meaning clues of the systematic treatises are intended to represent memory aids for long discussions on any topic which a student undergoes with his teacher. But a deep study of the early Vedantasutras shows that these were unintelligible that resulted in multifaceted interpretations.

Though some efforts were made by the early thinkers who never deviated from the Advaitic notion of Reality no works of such efforts are available it can be said that Badarayana's efforts to schematize these Advaitic thoughts deserve significance as they are truly documented. Even in the case of the author of the Brahmasutras, some doubts have been raised about whether this Badarayana is the same as that of the Vyasa of Mahabharata fame or a different person. The presence of expressive thought in some passages in Gita gives rise to this doubt on identity. However, Sankara considers those two as different personalities while Ramanuja and other commentators identify both of them (perhaps to support the bhakti aspect in Gita). There is another view that the work of Jaimini and Badarayana were combined into one which was commented on by Upavarsa that forms the basis of commentary by Sabara, on Purvamimamsa and Sankara on Uttaramimamsa. In Brahmasutra Sankara Bhasya Sankara makes this clear. This combining work may also be attributed to the Vyasa of Mahabharata or it may be the work of Vyasa who acquired traditionally the above Brahmasutras and then compiled them into the present form. There is evidence in Gita to show that it contains references to Brahmasutras. Further, this also reveals that the original Brahmasutras of Badarayana were further systematized by Vyasa including the statements of Gita. The Gita accepts the Samkhya view of creation but modifies it and makes the pradhan subservient to Brahman- the non-dual. In the Brahmasutras also the Sankhyan view is refuted and prakrti is considered as dependent on Brahman'. This view is highlighted by Sankara also.

Dr. N. P. Singh's published book ‘Shrimad Bhagavad Gita: A History’, almost all the mysteries of the Gita seem to be solved. The published book also contains all such information, which can prove to be important for us. The Bhagavad-gita has been so enigmatic in its verses, utterances, expressions, and vocabulary that it has probably been impossible to understand because of them, and it has become an unsolved puzzle for the world. The subject matter of the Gita is so diverse, due to it could not be understood in a systematic way. Its vocabulary is also such that the true meaning of many words is probably not known, so its expressions cannot be understood. Therefore, first of all, it has to be understood about Gita that what is Gita? What are its subject and basis? When and why was it created and what does it express? All this has been intelligently discussed in the published book.

The book covers almost all the points that may be of interest to anyone's curiosity, such as, who is the originator of the Gita? Who are Aatma, Paramatma, Parameshwara, Ishwar, Maheshwar, Bhagwan, Prabhu, etc.? What are Brahma, Vibhooti, Yoga, Punarjanm, Janmamrtyujaraadu:kh, Karma, Karmaphala, Yagya, Tapa, Bhakti, Dhyaan, Saankhy, Sannyaas, Tyaag, Buddhi, Gyaan, Janm–Bandhan, Moksh, Nirvaan, Mukti, Amrt, Shaanti, Bhaavana, Naishkarm, Divyadrshti, Om, Jagat, Lok, Surendralok and Praanaayaam? Who are Sthitaprajna, Yogi, Sanyasi, Deva, Devata, Daiva, Sur and Asura? Who are Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, Shudras, Chandalas, Papayanis, and Untouchables? Who are Yadu and Yadav? Who is Virata-Purush and what is Viratswaroop? What were the Varna-hybrid defect and its fear for women? Who are Dhartarashtra, Dhritarashtra, Pandava, Atatayi, Bhishma Drona, etc.? The diversity and randomness that we see in the Gita also prove to be rhythmic and systematic in the said book. Which verse of the Gita was composed, perhaps the reason has been given for it, so also the reason for the words used in the verses, since no verse, no facts, and no words are given in the Gita as such, but seem to have been given with an implicit purpose. The verses of the Gita are sentimental, but their expressions have been difficult to understand, their expressions have also been expressed. According to the book, the utterances of Gita were not given in any Kurukshetra for war, because more than war motivation, non-violent and knowledge-intellect are strong things in Gita, which have nothing to do with war. According to the book, Bhagavad Gita is the dialogue of the revolution, which saved India and its countrymen from a great crisis. Therefore Bhagavad Gita is a historical document.

From the study of the said book, we will also start to understand the subjects of Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads, Smritis, Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Buddhacharit, etc., how they are related to each other, and what is their subject. Because the Gita is the original scripture of all these, without understanding the Gita, their originality will not be understood. In the book, the chapters of Gita and their verses have been classified, so many statements of Gita have been shown to be confirmed by other sources as well. The writing work of the book generally appears neutral and impartial. The book is completely based on scientific and theoretical approaches. Therefore, there is no support in the book of supernaturalism, divinity, divinity, blindness, theism, reasonless-ness, and devotionals, and neither is there any support for the facts directly or indirectly in their favor, but the natural phenomenon has been understood naturally. Because the Gita does not establish theism, devotionals, and any religious beliefs, but through its expressed revolutions, it shows the welfare of the country and the countrymen, by understanding this we can know the history, religion-philosophy, and historical characters of that time properly.

The language of the book is simple and interesting to read and rhythmic. It is written in the scriptures of all religions that the soul is Supreme. Jain philosophy is not subject to any belief, sect, or physical action, but it is a philosophy of identification of the Self. In this book, the ten characteristics of Dharma (Uttam forgiveness, Uttam Mardava, Uttam Arjava, Uttam truth, Uttam defecation, Uttam restraint, Uttam austerity, Uttam renunciation, Uttam Akinchan, Uttam celibacy) have been analyzed in simple colloquial language. In the West, it flourished in Ancient Greece, late Rome, and medieval universities. During the Renaissance, it floundered and was resurrected in the seventeenth century, most notably by Descartes, Leibniz, Spinoza, and Bishop Berkeley. Under the scrutiny of Locke, Hume, and later Kant, metaphysics staggered but was bolstered by Hegel. Attacks on Hegel soon arose, but his thought encouraged and deeply influenced many philosophers in Britain, including Thomas Hill Green and Francis Herbert Bradley. Darwin's influence was seen in the metaphysics of Samuel Alexander. In the United States toward the last half of the nineteenth century and early twentieth centuries, metaphysics found life abundant in Charles Sanders Peirce, Josiah Royce, George Santayana, Borden Parker Bowne, Alfred North Whitehead, and Charles Hartshorne.

With the emergence of the linguistic turn and the persuasive power of positivism, metaphysics was considered by many to be a thing of the past. Since the passing of Josiah Royce in the United States and F. H. Bradley in the United Kingdom, few in the twentieth-century West have attempted to develop a system of absolute idealism on a grand scale. Exceptions such as J. N. Findlay, T. L. S. Sprigge, and Brand Blanshard come to mind. During the twentieth century in the East, Absolute Idealism was given a full statement in the thought of K. C. Bhattacharyya, a philosopher deeply influenced by Advaita Vedanta.

Introduction

1. Defining Philosophy

It is pointed out that philosophy is constituted of the following theses: analysis and then synthesis of philosophical concepts, i.e. the most basic concepts of all. The synthesis of philosophical concepts involves the construction of a worldview analogous to a map. It searches for knowledge of truths distinct from artistic truths, religious truths and scientific truths. It is divided into five basic areas: metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, aesthetics and logic. It may also involve analysis of basic concepts of other subjects as well which would require detailed knowledge of these subjects in which we would be doing philosophy of art, philosophy of religion and philosophy of science. It involves the construction of a coherent and comprehensive system of general ideas explaining every element of existence-A.N. Whitehead. It involves determining not only the general picture of the world but also one's unique place or role in it. It is a therapy of the soul to overcome alienation. It involves systematic introspection of one's basic beliefs and so acquiring reasoned beliefs rather than just beliefs accepted ad hoc and enables us to change our beliefs and thereby our attitude to life-J.N. Chubb. Philosophical reasoning is sui generic; it is self-sufficient and self-subsistent-G.R. Malkani and G.W.F. Hegel. Philosophy is independent of science, religion and art and yet includes all three in its ambit. Philosophy's tool is synthetic a priori reasoning. It aims to construct deductive proofs-Spinoza. It aims to discover simple philosophical mathematical formulae about reality. It aims at a final explanation; the question 'why?' cannot occur again. It requires a great deal of general knowledge as a background to think in.

From an objective standpoint philosophy is the analysis of the most fundamental concepts, concepts applicable to absolutely everything i.c. it deals with the most comprehensive concepts. Also, it deals with concepts presupposed by all other subjects. Not only is this the case but among them are concepts presupposed in our ordinary everyday speech. Philosophy, therefore, has the most comprehensive scope and also the base or that is most background reference. It is then the foundational subject and all other subjects are based upon it.

The systematic elucidation of these concepts amounts to the construction of a map by which to guide our behaviour in life's sojourn in the world in the pursuit of knowledge, power and love, in short, satisfy the desire for happiness! And value and imbibe truth, goodness and beauty (including the beauty of moral character).

And so to acquire the knowledge of love and the love of knowledge, and the power of love and the love of power. In the history of thought ‘ Theory of Knowledge’ has been construed as that branch of philosophy that deals with problems concerning the origin, nature, validity, limits, and conditions of knowledge. Epistemology has a long history within Western philosophy beginning with ancient Greek philosophy and continuing to the present. In Indian Philosophy all systems have their epistemology but Nyaya and Vedanta Darshan has a vast Epistemology. Generally, western philosophers accept two types of sources of knowledge – Perception, and Inference, but Indian Philosophers have different opinions. Charvaka Darshan accepts only one source of knowledge i.e Perception. Buddha and Vaisheshika Darshan accepts two sources –Perception and Inference. Sankhya and Yoga Darshan accept three sources – Perception, Inference, and Sabda (Testimony) whereas Nyaya Darshan has a different opinion. It accepts four means of knowledge - Perception, Inference, Sabda (Testimony), and Upamana ( Analogy). In Mimansa Darshan Prabhakar Mimansak added Arthapatti in it and accepts five sources along with Perception, Inference, Sabda (Testimony), and Upamana ( Analogy). Bhatta Mimansak and Vedanta Darshan accept six sources - Perception, Inference, Sabda (Testimony), Upamana ( Analogy), Arthapatti, and Anuplabdhi. Is it relevant for contemporary yoga practitioners to study the Yoga Sutra? What do the various Indian gods and goddesses really symbolize? And what do yogic and tantric traditions have in common? In the following period, however, dissatisfaction with this one MS-based edition simmered and led a scholar like V. Raghavan to attempt, in the form of several articles in Annals of Oriental Research (University of Madras 1954-59), to purify the YD text of its numerous "corruptions." In 1967 came R.C. Pandeya's edition of Yuktidipika, based on two manuscripts, which was followed by two more editions (1970) and (1996) respectively. The 1996 edition by Kedara Nath Tripathi even though it had no additional manuscript material to work on, provided a better text than Pandeya's. In 1998 came the German edition, critically edited by A. Wezler and S. Motegi. However, since (i) this edition was in Roman script and so not easily accessible to those many in India and elsewhere who were accustomed to studying a Sanskrit text in Devanagari, and (ii) since it had its own limitations and shortcomings it was felt that there was a clear warrant for a fresh edition. A singular feature of critical edition is that, besides being based, unlike most previous editions, on five MSS, it simultaneously provides almost all the variant readings, whether embodied in Raghvanís corrections/emendations or effected by earlier editions, including the German one. It thus offers the reader an opportunity to select, in a particular context, any of the (given) readings in case he feels skeptical about the reading adopted by the editor. The fourth Adhyaya describes how a successful seeker achieves a state of eternal bliss.

Badarayanavyasa presents here the concept of meditation practised By the Indian sages knowing Vedas, from the prehistoric antiquity. Meditation is quite a popular topic now-a-days. In India Meditation is practised not only by the followers of Vedic traditions, but also by others like Jains, Buddhists, Shaktas, Pashupatas etc. The concepts of Meditation dealt with in this book are quite different from those advocated by the followers of other traditions, in the matter of "What to meditate upon" and "What to achieve through meditation," and so on. The meditation described here is that practised by the Indian sages knowing Vedas, much before Patanjali, Buddha and Mahavira. The book deals with meditation and much more. For, meditation is the final step in the spiritual pursuit. It is preceded by other steps like Vairagya, Bhakti, Shravana, Manana etc. In fact the author presents here an impartial and objective study of Brahmasutras in Adhyayas III and IV, referring to the three principal commentaries, namely those of Shankaracharya, Ramanujacharya and Madhvacharya.

These Brahmasutras composed by Badarayana Vyasa constitute the central text of Vedanta Philosophy. Badarayana Vyasa is credited with the task of collecting, collating and editing the Vedas, the oldest literature in the world. When different doctrines like Sankhya, Vaisheshika etc. developed within the Vedic tradition and the common people stood confused, Badarayana Vyasa had to give his authoritative judgements on what exactly is the quintessence of Vedic teachings, in his masterpiece known as Brahmasutra or Vedantasutra. It is universally recognized as the manual of Vedanta.

In spite of such a systematic presentation of Vedanta thought, a number of divergent schools have developed within Vedanta Philosophy and the common man's confusion continues. Three of them are important. They are (i) Shankaracharya's Advaita, (ii) Ramanujacharya's Vishishtadvaita and (iii) Madhvacharya’s Dvaita. Historically, Shankaracharya's commentary is the earliest one and his doctrine has been propagated by great scholars Vivekananda and S. Radhakrishnan. So a majority of intelligentsia in India and abroad believes that Vedanta me Advaita Philosophy. Recently, scholars like V.S. Ghate, B.N.K Sharma, have tried to remove this misconception. But still, Advaita has a dominant position in the World.

The Brahmasutras are arranged in four chapters or Adhyayas In the first Adhyaya the author presents the nature and attributes of Brahman, Who creates and controls this world. In the seer he shows the flaws in the contemporary doctrines, both orthodox and heretical, and refutes them. In addition, he removes the apparent conflicts in Vedic statements themselves, and establishes Vedic concepts of origination of matter and souls in the world Dr. Raghavendra Katti has written and published in 2013, a book 'Brahman, The Supreme Being, in Brahmasutras,' in which he presented an objective study of Sutras in these two Adhyayas referring to the three principal commentaries mentioned above He has shown therein that Madhvacharya's interpretations of Sutras are more convincing. I had an occasion to glance through the book and to record my appreciation of that book.

The aim of the seekers is to get liberated from the miserable worldly life and to achieve eternal bliss i.e. Moksha. So, having known the nature and attributes of the Lord, and His creation matter and souls, the seeker is bound to ask himself what should do next. In other words, he wants to know the mean getting Moksha. Badarayana Vyasa has dealt with this topic in third Adhyaya known as Sadhanadhyaya. He holds that one can attain to moksha only by means of the Lord’s grace and His direct perception i.e. Aparokshajnyana. For achieving both he prescribes the steps like Vairagya, Bhakti, Shravana, Manana, Dhyana etc. In the fourth Adhyaya, the author mentions the fruits of these Hence it is known as Phaladhyaya. He describes these fruits in four steps viz. (i) Karmakshya i.e. destruction of accumulated sins,(ii) Utkranti i.e. departure of the soul through Brahmarandhra, (iii) Marga i.e. journey to Brahmaloka through Devayanamarga and (iv) Bhoga i.e. enjoyment of bliss in Moksha. Thus, in these two Adhyayas the author has presented the practical side of vedic religion. However, people show less interest in this portion than that shown in the theoretical discussions appearing in the first first two Adhyayas.

In this book, Dr. Raghavendra Katti has objectively analysed All the Sutras in these two Adhyayas, referring to the same three principaI commentaries. While making comparative study of these great commentaries, the author seems to be aware of the fact that competent to hold somebody's interpretation as incorrect or to opine that somebody's interpretation is correct. He has only expressed whether he is convinced by a particular interpretation or not, and has given his reasons thereof. He is within his rights thereof. He is within his rights to say so. Here, the commentators agree on the purport of some Sutras and differ on many. Wherever they differ, the author has concluded the interpretations of Shankaracharya and Ramanujacharya as unconvincing because they are found to be stating some isolated topics having little relevance to the theme two Adhyayas. For example, one Sutra decides that the rinsing of the mouth with water is enjoined by the Shruti, only after a meal, but not both before and after a meal. Another Sutra confirms that offering five oblations to the five Pranas can be omitted on fasting days. On the other hand, Dr. Katti finds Madhvacharya's interpretations quite convincing because they add up to a clear-cut system which can be pursued by the seeker. Moreover, Madhvacharya quotes corroborative extracts from wide range of Smritis and Puranas in support of his interpretation. The extracts being the statements of knowledgeable and credible persons, Madhvacharya's conclusions are found to be in keeping with contemporary thinking in the days of Badarayana Vyasa.

Dr. Raghavendra Katti has extensively quoted extracts from other standard works on the subject in support of his views. He has honestly expressed his findings irrespective of whether others agree with him or not. He has clearly brought out the import, each Sutra. The author appears to be having the knack of explaining even difficult topics to ordinary students. At places, he has explained some technical terms like 'Hetugarbhavisheshana', 'Pratiyogin 'Vedanga' etc. in the footnotes for the benefit of those who do not know them. Only those who try to study Brahmasutras will understand the value of this book. This book will surely be an important addition to the philosophical literature.

I congratulate Dr. Raghavendra Katti for his contribution and hope that his indepth study of Vedanta will result in many more such works.

Preface

My first book on Brahmasutras namely 'Brahman, The Supreme Being, in Brahmasutras', has been published in Bengaluru in March 2013. It is my thesis submitted to and accepted by the University of Pune for a Ph.D. degree in Sanskrit. In this dissertation, I have considered the problem as to how the same Brahmasutras can advocate such divergent and mutually conflicting doctrines like Vivartavada, Vishishtadvaitavada and the so called Dvaitavada, as claimed by the respective protagonists of these doctrines. A Sutra by definition is expected to make an unambiguous and exact statement. So in this book which covers the study of the first two Adhyayas of Brahmasutra, I have tried to understand what Badarayana Vyasa intends to convey through these Sutras, depending on the syntax, semantics, contextual propriety, schematic relevance etc. of the words used in the Sutras. My objective study of these Sutras with the help of a commentary by Shri Raghavendratirtha reveals that there is no support for or reference to the Vivartavada of Shankaracharya and that Badarayana Vyasa and Shankaracharya hold different views on the purport of Vedas. Similarly, Ramanujacharya's concept of Brahman having the insentient matter and sentient individual souls as His body, is nowhere indicated in the Sutras.

Incidentally, a British scholar, George Thibaut remarks: I "The Shankar-bhashya further is the authority most generally deferred to in India as to the right understanding of the Vedanta-sutras and ever since Shankara's time the majority of the best thinkers of India have been men belonging to his school". In fact, to start with I studied Advaita Vedanta sincerely for about 15 years and I have great regard for Shankaracharya for all that he has done for protecting the sanctity of Vedas and Vedic religion in that hostile era. As a result I have more number of Advaita friends than others. During the period of eight years of my research work, the professors whom I consulted, my friends with whom I discussed the import of the Sutras and those who helped me in proofreading, were all the followers, of Shankaracharya only. Under these circumstances my work was an exercise in swimming against the current. So my conclusions came as a great disappointment to all these people.

Many of these people feel that I am biassed towards Madhvacharya because I belong to Madhva sect. Of course, eulogizing the preceptor of one's own sect is not an offence. But, since I have made an objective study, I feel hurt especially when some hold me to be partial even without seeing what I have written. For, they judge on the basis of 'who has written,' instead of 'what is written.' Some are found to be intolerant of even listening to a debate on whether Shankarabhashya gives the correct import of the Sutras. George Thibaut rightly observes: "But to the European -- or generally, modern-translator of the Vedantasutras with Shankara's commentary another question will of course suggest itself at once, viz. whether or not Shankara's explanations faithfully render the intended meaning of the author of the Sutras. To the Indain Pandit of Shankara's school this question has become an indifferent one, or to state the case more accurately, he objects to its being raised, as he looks on Shankara's authority as standing above doubt and dispute.' ' So, naturally many feel offended when someone even debates the validity of Shankarabhashya. Such annoyance is clearly discernible in a review of my book in the Journal of Oriental Research, Vols. 85-86, published by Kuppuswami Sastri Research Institute, Chennai. The scholar who reviewed the book says : "The author even goes to the extent of saying that Vivartavada has little relevance in the Sutras where Shankara discusses Parinamavada and wherever Shankara advocates the Kevaladvaita doctrine, it is based on Upanishads and not on Brahmasutras revealing that Badarayana and Shankara hold different views on the purport of the Vedas. To express in a nutshell, pooh-poohing Shankara's expositions with relevant Shruti support various concepts of creation, Jagatkarana, Nirguna Brahman, Saguna Brahman, role of Maya, Jiva-Brahma-aikyam, etc. in this text quoting Raghavendratirtha's commentary may not be palatable to learned scholars, leave alone Advaitins." But, the scholar has not brought forward any new point other than what I have concluded, and has not provided any justification as to why the Advaita doctrine should be accepted as being in agreement with the Sutras.

The fact that Shankaracharya's commentary on the Sutras is the earliest one, is not a sufficient proof of its correctness, and it can not prevent later commentators from throwing fresh light on the Sutras. The learned scholars may note a wise saying) which states that, "Everything is not proper and pleasant simply because it is old; and any scholarly knowledge also is not to be disliked because it is new. The wise ones accept one of the two after scrutiny; the dullards rely on another's conviction." S. Radhakrishnan also expresses similar sentiments. He says': "In the history of thought it has often happened that a philosophy has been victimized by a traditional interpretation that became estasblished at an early date, and has thereafter prevented critics and commentators from placing it in its proper perspective."

On the other hand, after the release of the book, the Publisher received some complaints as well as suggestions for corrections in the book, from some accomplished readers belonging to the Madhva sect. The Publisher wrote to me saying that 'a review of the said book reveals certain remarks, comments and opinions expressed by the author which appear to be not correctly conveying the conceptual greatness and sanctity of Sri Madhwa Bhashya". In short, my objective and academic approach and style, my individual judgements and opinions, my references to Raghavendratirtha instead of Madhvacharya, my pointing out of the difference of approach between Madhvacharya, Jayatirtha and Raghavendratirtha, my use of the words guess-work, stunning and prima facie unbelievable, ingenious, imaginative etc. with reference to Madhvacharya's interpretations, are not acceptable to the. traditional scholars. In their view, I have belittled Madhvacharya and failed to glorify the most appropriate interpretation offered by Madhvacharya. So, the Publisher thought it fit to paste disclaimer below the 'Publisher's Note'. Thus, the Advaitins think that I have belittled Shankaracharya and the Dvaitins surmise that I have belittled Madhvacharya. The country has emerged as a world economic power and is heading to break its own past records. All this is, no doubt, laudable. But the irony is that people are flushed with money yet they seem to be frustrated and unhappy. Thousands of farmers and students are found committing suicide every year. If a dozen people are asked about the cause of their frustration, they may tell a dozen different reasons for their agony, despite having all the necessary material comforts. They are not content with what they have. Everyone is short of some material possession and is therefore unhappy. The fact of the matter is that material prosperity is only a means to an end, but not an end in itself. One cannot buy happiness with money. People suffer more, not because of shortage of food, clothing and shelter, but on account of their own shortcomings like greed, selfishness, jealousy, hatred, enmity, revengefulness, etc. This is not to suggest that we may refrain from economic development and an improvement in quality of life and standard of living. Life and death hinges on the quality of our knowledge because all our actions are based on the accumulation of knowledge we keep distilling from myriad experiences and the impressions they leave on our minds. Virtuous actions can lead us to good future while the opposite can invite unwanted misery. Understanding is the primary requisite in discriminating good and bad actions, in determining what constitutes virtue and vice. Consequences follow all actions and inactions, there is no escape. Hence, knowledge which is virtuous and guided by the principles of Dharma Shastra is the essential acquisition humans must secure. As is the understanding, so is our action and likewise are the consequences.

This book is a labour of repeated distillation of important and essential scriptures to derive a clarified understanding of what they intended for us in order that the human race prospers continuously and keep all conceivable woes at bay. Primary references being Mahabharata, Valmiki Ramayana, Srimad Bhagwata Purana, this book has also referred Manu Smriti, Narada Purana, Shiva Purana, and other principle Upanishads and treatises of Hindu scriptures. Life is only learnt from the past which is termed as history. Only a past mistake enables us to cognize the fact that a similar action shall beget similar outcome, we learn from historical anecdotes the behaviours that deliver happiness and those that have misery alone as their outcome. The future is determined by the wisdom we acquire from scriptures which precisely and wholly is the past; the knowledge acquired thus moulds our future by applying it to present actions. Present is like the middle of a rope that establishes connection between the posterior far end and the anterior far end in the form of two ends of the rope. As a man establishes relationship between his father and his son through his own existence, the present is crucial in determining the quality of future to be erected.
