He saw life an many points and that too at close quarters. In the early years of his political career he moved freely in the villages of the United Provinces with the zeal of a missionary in the scorching heat of an unkind Indian summer discarding creature comforts and identifying himself completely with their interests. He achieved a niche in the hearts of millions and millions of his countrymen who loved and adored him as veritable god on earth and their affection has endured even after their hero's death. He inspired them to be up and doing by his speeches and by his bubbling enthusiasm and their abiding lover inspired him, too, to dedicate himself to their service.
Gandhiji is the Father of the Nation but Nehru is the foster-father of India who preserved and stabilised the hard won freedom. He gave it economic substance.
