Devadatta Kali (David Nelson)

Devadatta Kali (born 1949) is an American writer, teacher, and spiritual practitioner best known for his works on Hindu spirituality, particularly the Tantric and Vedantic traditions of the Goddess (Shakta) worship. He is a disciple of Swami Pavitrananda, who was a senior monk of the Ramakrishna Order, and has been associated with the Vedanta Society of Southern California for several decades.

Early Life and Education
Born in the United States, Devadatta Kali (original name David Nelson) was drawn to Hindu philosophy and mysticism at an early age. His encounter with the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, and Sri Sarada Devi deeply influenced his spiritual path. After meeting Swami Pavitrananda in the 1970s, he was initiated into the Ramakrishna-Vedanta tradition and given the name Devadatta Kali (“the one who offers himself to the Goddess”).

Devadatta Kali is known for interpreting Hindu scriptures and spiritual practices for modern readers while remaining faithful to their traditional essence. His writing combines scholarly insight, poetic sensitivity, and deep devotion to the Divine Mother.

His major works include:

In Praise of the Goddess: The Devimahatmya and Its Meaning (2003) — A modern English translation and commentary on the Devi Mahatmya (also known as Chandi), exploring the symbolic and spiritual meaning of the Goddess.

The Veiling Brilliance: Meditations on Shakti (2008) — Essays on the power of the Divine Feminine and her manifestation in the universe and human consciousness.

Devadatta Kali’s work bridges Advaita Vedanta, Tantra, and Bhakti, presenting them as complementary paths to realization. He emphasizes the unity of divine consciousness behind all forms and the transformative role of self-knowledge and devotion in spiritual life.

Legacy
Through his writings, lectures, and participation in interfaith dialogues, Devadatta Kali has contributed to the contemporary understanding of Hinduism in the West. His approach—deeply devotional yet intellectually grounded—makes complex Tantric symbolism and Sanskrit scripture accessible to global readers.
