R. C. Majumdar
Ramesh Chandra Majumdar, born on 4 December 1888 in Khandarpara, Faridpur (now in Bangladesh), grew up in modest circumstances. Despite economic challenges, he showed early brilliance in academics and a deep interest in history and culture, which shaped his intellectual journey.
Education and Training
Majumdar studied at Presidency College, Calcutta, earning his M.A. in History in 1911 with distinction. He later obtained his doctorate from Calcutta University in 1917, focusing on the early history of Bengal. His rigorous training in history combined traditional Indian perspectives with modern historiographical methods.
Career and Contributions
Majumdar served as a professor of history at Calcutta University and later became the Vice-Chancellor of Dacca University. He also taught at Banaras Hindu University and other institutions. His research ranged widely, covering ancient, medieval, and modern Indian history.
He is especially remembered for his works on the freedom movement and Indian cultural history. Majumdar was the chief editor of the multi-volume The History and Culture of the Indian People, a monumental series published by the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. He was also known for his independent stance on the interpretation of India’s freedom struggle, often differing from the official nationalist narrative, which sometimes brought him into controversy but highlighted his commitment to objective scholarship.
