S. S. Cohen (1899 – 1980)
Philosopher • Disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi • Author on Advaita Vedanta

S. S. Cohen, originally from Baghdad, Iraq, was a distinguished disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi and one of the earliest Western devotees to settle permanently at Sri Ramanasramam, Tiruvannamalai, India. Trained as an engineer, Cohen’s life took a spiritual turn after encountering the teachings of Advaita Vedanta and Ramana Maharshi’s emphasis on Self-enquiry (Ātma-vichāra).

Cohen arrived at Sri Ramanasramam in the 1930s, where he lived and studied under the direct guidance of Ramana Maharshi for many years. Deeply influenced by the Maharshi’s silence and teachings on non-duality, Cohen devoted the rest of his life to interpreting and disseminating the Advaitic philosophy in lucid English for Western and Indian seekers alike.

His writings—marked by clarity, precision, and devotion—bridge the gap between traditional Vedantic thought and modern rational inquiry. Cohen’s most celebrated works include:

Advaitic Sadhana: The Spiritual Discipline of Non-Duality

Guru Ramana (a detailed record of Ramana Maharshi’s conversations and teachings)
Reflections on Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi
The Essence of Ribhu Gita (translations and reflections)

Cohen’s contribution lies in making the practical path of Self-realization accessible to readers through simple language and experiential insight rather than abstract metaphysics. He remained in India until his passing in 1980, leaving behind a legacy of spiritual writings that continue to inspire seekers of Truth.
