Sangharakshita

Sangharakshita (1925–2018), born Dennis Lingwood in London, was a British Buddhist teacher, writer, and the founder of the Triratna Buddhist Community (formerly known as the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order – FWBO). He played a pivotal role in introducing Buddhism to the modern Western world and emphasized a non-sectarian, inclusive approach to Buddhist practice that integrated teachings from different traditions.

Early Life and Education
Born on August 26, 1925, in Tooting, London, Dennis Lingwood showed an early interest in Eastern thought, philosophy, and religion. His encounter with Buddhist texts, particularly the Diamond Sutra and The Heart Sutra, as a teenager deeply influenced his spiritual path.

During World War II, while serving in the British Army in India, he encountered living Buddhist traditions for the first time. After the war, he decided to remain in India to pursue a life of spiritual practice and study.

Ordination and Buddhist Training
In 1949, he was ordained as a Buddhist monk in the Theravāda tradition at Kusinagar, India, under the name Sangharakshita, meaning “Protected by the Spiritual Community.” He spent over 20 years in India studying and teaching Buddhism.

He was deeply influenced not only by Theravāda Buddhism but also by Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions, particularly through contact with Tibetan teachers like Dudjom Rinpoche and Jigme Lingpa’s lineage. His broad and inclusive understanding of Buddhism became the hallmark of his later work.

Founding of the Triratna Buddhist Community
Upon returning to England in 1967, Sangharakshita recognized the need for a form of Buddhism suited to modern Western life. He founded the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) in 1967, later renamed the Triratna Buddhist Community.

The community aimed to offer a non-sectarian framework rooted in core Buddhist principles such as ethics, meditation, and wisdom, while free from traditional monastic and cultural constraints. Sangharakshita emphasized personal spiritual development, friendship, and the integration of spiritual practice into everyday life.

Writings and Teachings
Sangharakshita was a prolific writer and speaker, authoring over 50 books on Buddhism, meditation, and spiritual life. His works explore key Buddhist concepts in a clear and accessible way for modern readers.

Some of his notable works include:
A Survey of Buddhism – A comprehensive overview of Buddhist philosophy and practice.
The Three Jewels – An exploration of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.
The Eternal Legacy – A study of the canonical Buddhist scriptures.
The Buddha’s Noble Eightfold Path – A practical guide to ethical and meditative living.
Living with Awareness and Living with Kindness – Reflections on mindfulness and compassion.

Philosophy and Influence
Sangharakshita’s vision of Buddhism emphasized the importance of:
Spiritual friendship (kalyāṇa-mittatā)
Ethical living as the foundation of practice
Mindfulness and meditation as central disciplines
Art, beauty, and culture as expressions of spiritual life
Gender equality and inclusivity in spiritual communities
Through his leadership, the Triratna Buddhist Community grew into an international movement, with centers across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Later Life and Legacy
In his later years, Sangharakshita lived at Adhisthana, a spiritual retreat center in Herefordshire, England. He continued to write, mentor practitioners, and reflect on his long spiritual journey.

He passed away on October 30, 2018, at the age of 93. Despite some controversies within the community, his contributions to the global spread of Buddhism remain highly influential. His teachings continue to inspire thousands of practitioners seeking a rational, modern, and humanistic expression of Buddhist wisdom.
