FOREWORD

When a peerless Jivanmukta sheds his body and becomes not just a Mukta but the all-embracing Parabrahman, gracious and benignant as ever, we can only hope to subdue common human feelings of distress at the disappearance of the visible presence and try to attune ourselves to the adoration of yet another manifestation of the ineffable Brahman at the new adhistanam at Kanchi. The task of subduing one's emotions is always difficult but is nearly impossible when it concerns a kindly prophet, a living God whose avyaja karunya embraced all that was living and whose smile, charming and enchanting beyond all words, helped to dissolve all human suffering and woe. This is all the more poignant when one finds that a book of discourses designed to be a festschrift, a padakanika; has now to be placed as an offering at the Adhistana instead of into those kindly, beneficent hands. One thinks of the warm kindliness with which those hands would have turned over the pages with a razor-sharp and deer-swift comprehension of its essence. That measureless good fortune has, through a wholly unexpected dispensation of Providence, been withheld from us.

This book is a compilation of learned discourses on subjects which touch the unusally comprehensive and wide Paramartika interests of the sage to whom it is dedicated with the utmost reverence. The contributors are panditas of distinguished standing besides being devoted sishyas of the great Acharya. Vepathur Subrahmanya Sastrigal
