1. Rani Lakshmibai (1828–1858)

  • The Queen of Jhansi, she became a symbol of resistance against British rule during the 1857 uprising. She is remembered for her bravery in battle and leadership.

2. Sarojini Naidu (1879–1949)

  • Known as the "Nightingale of India," Sarojini Naidu was a poet, freedom fighter, and the first woman to become the president of the Indian National Congress. She also became the first woman governor in independent India.

3. Indira Gandhi (1917–1984)

  • The first and, to date, the only female Prime Minister of India. Her tenure as Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984, marked a period of significant political and social change in India.

4. Kasturba Gandhi (1869–1944)

  • A prominent social and political activist, Kasturba was a close partner to Mahatma Gandhi in the Indian freedom movement. She worked for the upliftment of women, children, and marginalized communities.

5. Mother Teresa (1910–1997)

  • Known for her selfless work with the poor, especially in Kolkata, she founded the Missionaries of Charity. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her humanitarian work.

6. Begum Hazrat Mahal (1820–1879)

  • A key figure in the 1857 rebellion, Begum Hazrat Mahal played a pivotal role in the battle against the British and became an icon of resistance.

7. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1888–1975)

  • A scholar and teacher, Dr. Radhakrishnan made significant contributions to Indian philosophy and education, and served as the President of India. He was a strong advocate for women's education.

8. Mirabai (1498–1547)

  • A poet-saint and devotee of Krishna, Mirabai's bhajans (devotional songs) are still widely sung today. Her poetry conveyed spiritual love and devotion.

9. Kalpana Chawla (1961–2003)

  • The first woman of Indian origin in space, Kalpana was a NASA astronaut who tragically died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.

10. Savitribai Phule (1831–1897)

  • A social reformer and poet, she is one of the earliest champions of women's education in India. She and her husband, Jyotirao Phule, established the first school for girls in India.

11. Vikram Sarabhai (1931–1971)

  • Though not a woman, it is worth mentioning the contributions of women in the space program, such as Madhuri Dixit and Nandini Harinath, who played significant roles in space exploration and science.

12. Bhikaji Cama (1861–1938)

  • A revolutionary and one of the first women to take part in the freedom movement. She was involved in the independence struggle and is known for unfurling the Indian flag in Germany in 1907.

13. Anandi Gopal Joshi (1865–1887)

  • The first Indian woman to become a doctor in the United States. Her achievement was remarkable during a time when women's education was not given much importance.

14. Lalitha Prabhu (1912-1978)

  • One of the first women to hold the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of an airline, she contributed to the modernization and operational efficiency of Indian air transport.
