Philosophies of India
- +
We of the Occident", writes Zimmer", are about to arrive at a crossroads that was reached by the thinkers of India some seven hundred years before christ. This is the real reason why we become both vexed and stimulated, uneasy yet interested, when conforonted with the concepts and images of Oriental wisdom".

A monumental work, Philosophies of India is divided into three main sections: The Highest Good, a discussion of Eastern and Western thought and their meeting, and of the foundation of Indian Philosophy; The Philosophies of Time, being the philosophies of success, of pleasure, and of duty; finally The Philosophies of Eternity, this forms the major portion of the work, Jainism, Sankhya and Yoga, Brahmanism, Buddhism and Tantra.

About the Author:

Noted indologist Heinrich Zimmer, born in Germany in 1890, came to the United States in 1940, at the height of his career, and was lecturing at Columbia university when he died in 1943. His other works include: Myths and Symbols in Indian Art and Civilization; The King and the Corpse; and The Art of indian asia. All these books were prepared for publication by Joseph Campbell, author of the Hero with a Thousand Faces ( Princeton/ Bollingen), from extensive notes left by Heinrich Zimmer at the time of his premature death.

Excerpts from Reviews:

Indian philosophy was at the heart of Zimmer's interest in oriental studies, and this volume therefore represents his major contribution to our understanding of Asia. It is both the most complete and most intelligent account of this extraordinarily rich and complex philosophical tradition yet written.
Alan Watts, New York Times Book Review.

Dr. Zimmer has introduced such order and coherence into the rich profusion of Indian thought that one wonders whether his services to Indian philosophy are not as great as his contibution to Western understanding of India.
R.J.K.Murray, The philosophical Quarterly.

Unhesitatingly, we call this a great book, one which represents a definite advance in the treatment of the philosophical thought of India.
Kurt F. Leidecker, The Personalist.

This magnificent exposition of Indian Thought by Zimmer is compiled from the lecture notes of the scholar, put together with the necessary linkages by Joseph Campbell.
M.P.Pandit, Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry.

The book is in three parts, each part packed with matter and vividly presented, objectively perceived and sympathetically interpreted.
Prof. S. Ramaswamy, The Mountain Path.

This is a kind of book which must be read deeply, brooded over, assessed internally and practised externally.
J.S.Bright, The Spokesman Weekly.
