F. Max Muller

Early Life & Education

Friedrich Max Müller, better known as F. Max Müller, was born in Dessau, Germany, into a distinguished intellectual family. His father, Wilhelm Müller, was a celebrated poet. Max Müller studied classical languages and philosophy at Leipzig University, later continuing at Berlin and Paris, where he was profoundly influenced by Orientalist scholars like Eugène Burnouf.

In 1846, Müller moved to England and soon established himself at Oxford University, where he would spend most of his life.

Academic Career & Indology

Max Müller devoted his career to the study of Sanskrit, Indian philosophy, and comparative religion. He became a pioneer in introducing Indian thought to the West through rigorous philological and textual studies.

His most famous achievement was the editing of the Rig Veda with Sayana’s commentary, published between 1849 and 1874, which made one of the world’s oldest sacred texts accessible to European scholars.

The Sacred Books of the East

Müller was also the general editor of the monumental series “The Sacred Books of the East” (50 volumes, published 1879–1910). This collection included translations of the Vedas, Upanishads, Buddhist, Jain, Confucian, Taoist, and Islamic texts, offering Western readers an unprecedented gateway into Asian religious traditions.

Contributions to Philology & Comparative Religion

Advocated for the scientific study of religion, which he termed the “Science of Religion.”

Advanced the field of comparative philology, arguing for the shared roots of Indo-European languages.

Wrote extensively on Vedanta, Vedic hymns, Upanishads, and Indian mythology.

His works popularized Indian philosophy in Europe and influenced figures such as Swami Vivekananda.

Recognition & Honours

Appointed Professor of Comparative Philology at Oxford University (1868).

Honorary member of numerous academies and recipient of international scholarly awards.

Knighted by Queen Victoria in 1883.

Personal Life & Legacy

Max Müller married Georgina Grenfell in 1859 and became a naturalized British citizen in 1855. He spent his life balancing scholarship with efforts to promote understanding between East and West.

He passed away in Oxford in 1900, leaving a vast legacy of scholarship.

Müller is remembered as one of the founding fathers of Indology, whose meticulous translations and studies opened the treasures of Indian scriptures to the world. His work remains central to the study of Sanskrit, comparative religion, and the intellectual history of East–West encounters.
