Vasant Lad
Early Life & Initiation
Vasant Dattatray Lad was born in Pune, Maharashtra, India. From childhood, he was exposed to spiritual teachings. Around the age of 10, his father’s guru gave him a mantra and told him that he would one day become a great Ayurvedic student and teacher, travel abroad, write books, and spread healing wisdom. Though young Vasant doubted this—saying he did not even know English—the guru reassured him that through meditation and devotion, everything would manifest.
Education & Early Career in India
Dr. Lad earned a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery (BAMS) from the University of Pune and later completed a Master of Ayurvedic Science (MASc) from Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya. Alongside Ayurveda, he also studied aspects of Western medicine and surgery.
In India, he served as the Medical Director of the Ayurveda Hospital in Pune for three years and later as Professor of Clinical Medicine at Pune University College of Ayurvedic Medicine. These experiences gave him a strong foundation in both clinical practice and teaching.

In the late 1970s, Dr. Lad was encouraged to travel to the United States to share the wisdom of Ayurveda. In 1979, he arrived in New York and began giving seminars. Over time, he lectured in various cities including Chicago, Houston, and eventually Santa Fe, New Mexico.
In Santa Fe, he became associated with the Santa Fe College of Natural Medicine, where he taught Ayurveda and gained recognition for his practical, clear, and compassionate approach. His teachings attracted many students and patients.
In 1984, he formally established The Ayurvedic Institute, which became one of the most important centers for Ayurvedic study and practice in the West. The Institute later moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where it continues to thrive under his guidance.
