INTRODUCTION
Sri 'Gomathidasa' Elathur Ramaswami Sastri was a versatile writer. His works in Sanskrit can be mainly classified (a) Kavyas, (D) Sastras, (c) Metrics and (d) Commentaries. An account of the e of the poet and details of his works have been already furnished the earlier publications Suruparaghavam kavya (1999) and Vrittaratnavali (2000). In this present edition titled "Selected Works" some other unpublished works of the poet are also being brought out.
This publication includes the following works of the poet.
1. Kaivalyavalli Parinayavilasa an allegorical drama in the model of Prabodhanandodaya of Krishnamisra. It is said that the poet composed this dramatic Champu work to teach Advaita philosophy to a Prince of the Travancore Royal family. A commentary in Sanskrit for the drama written by a grandson of the poet, our father Late H. Ramaswamy lyer, M.A, L.T, Retd. Head Master, Sanskrit School, Thiruvananthapuram is also included as Appendix I.
2 Kirtivilasa is a Champu Kavya written in a beautiful style. It describes the greatness of Ayilyam Thirunal Maharaja, the capital city and the royal court. Prominent scholars of the Royal court etc are described in it. The author introduces himself in the sloka "पाटीरद्रव..... गोमतीचरण भागाटीतायं कविः" (Stanza No. 84) which means that he has a spontaneous poetic out pouring which resembles the gallops of horses. Only the first Ullasa of the work could be traced out.
3 Gounasamagama is a small work describing the pageantry in the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram when Lord Napier, Governor of Madras visited Thiruvananthapuram in the year. 1863
