Cornelia Dimmitt
Education & Early Career
Cornelia Dimmitt was born in Boston and educated at Radcliffe College. She began her academic career teaching the History of Religion at American University and later became a tenured professor at Georgetown University.
Her scholarly interests centered on Hindu mythology, and she co-edited the acclaimed volume Classical Hindu Mythology: A Reader in the Sanskrit Puranas, which made important sections of the Puranas accessible to English-speaking readers and students.
Later Life & Work
In the mid-1980s, Dimmitt pursued studies at the C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich, where she completed her training in 1985 and became a Jungian psychoanalyst. Upon returning to the United States, she practiced psychoanalysis while continuing to explore the intersections between religion, symbolism, and the unconscious.
Legacy
Cornelia Dimmitt is remembered as a bridge between Eastern spirituality and Western psychology. Through her scholarship and therapeutic work, she brought profound insight into the mythic imagination and the enduring power of sacred stories.
