J. A. B. Van Buttenen

J. A. B. van Buitenen (Johannes Adrianus Bernardus van Buitenen, 1928–1979) was a distinguished Dutch Indologist, Sanskrit scholar, and translator, celebrated for his profound contributions to the study of Indian epics, philosophy, and classical literature, especially the Mahabharata.
Born in The Hague, Netherlands, in 1928, van Buitenen displayed an early passion for languages and the humanities. He studied Indology and Sanskrit at the University of Utrecht, where he completed his Ph.D. in 1953 under the guidance of the eminent scholar Jan Gonda, another leading figure in Indological studies.
Academic Career
After his doctoral studies, van Buitenen worked as a research scholar at Utrecht and later moved to the University of Chicago in 1959, where he became Professor of Sanskrit and Indic Studies. At Chicago, he played a pivotal role in establishing one of the most vibrant centers for Indian studies in the Western world.
He was instrumental in training a new generation of scholars in Sanskrit and Hindu philosophy and was known for his inspiring lectures and deep philological insight.
Scholarly Contributions
Van Buitenen’s scholarship spans:
• Vedic and classical Sanskrit literature
• Indian philosophical systems (especially Vedanta and Mimamsa)
• The Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita
• Hindu mythology and ritual traditions
He combined precise textual scholarship with a nuanced understanding of Indian cultural and spiritual contexts.
Major Works
Some of his landmark publications include:
• The Mahabharata (Vols. 1–3, translated and annotated; University of Chicago Press)
— Considered one of the most authoritative English translations, combining accuracy with literary elegance.
• Tales of Ancient India (1959)
• The Bhagavad Gita in the Mahabharata (1981, posthumously published)
• The Maitri Upanishad (1962)
• Numerous articles on Sanskrit poetics, mythology, and Vedantic thought.
Legacy
Van Buitenen passed away prematurely in 1979, at the age of 51, while still working on his multi-volume Mahabharata translation. His death was a great loss to the field of Indology.
Despite his short life, his scholarship remains foundational — blending rigorous textual analysis, philosophical depth, and literary sensitivity.
He is remembered as one of the finest interpreters of India’s epic and spiritual heritage in the modern era.
