R. W. Larieviere

Richard W. Lariviere is an American scholar of Sanskrit, Indian law, and Hindu religious traditions. He is best known for his academic work on Dharmashastra, particularly the study of ancient Indian legal texts such as the Dharmasutras and Smritis.

Born in the United States, Lariviere pursued his higher education in the study of South Asian languages and culture. He earned his Ph.D. in Sanskrit and Indian Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, where his doctoral research focused on medieval Indian legal theory.

Lariviere’s scholarship is recognized for combining philological precision with an understanding of the social and historical context of Indian legal literature. One of his most influential works is his translation and critical edition of the “Nāradasmṛti” (The Nārada Smṛti: A Treatise on Hindu Law), published by Motilal Banarsidass, which remains a key reference for students of Indian law and religion.

Beyond his contributions to Indology, Lariviere has also held prominent academic and administrative positions:
