Robert Philip Goldman was born in 1942 in the United States. From an early age, he developed an academic interest in languages, literature, and cultural studies. This passion eventually led him to pursue Sanskrit and classical Indian studies.

Goldman received advanced training in Sanskrit and Indology, earning his doctorate in the field. His scholarly formation placed him among the leading Western interpreters of Indian epics, particularly the Ramayana.

Academic Career

Robert P. Goldman built his academic career at the University of California, Berkeley, where he became Professor of Sanskrit and later Catherine and William L. Magistretti Distinguished Professor of Sanskrit. He also served as Chair of the Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies at Berkeley.

His teaching and research cover Sanskrit literature, epic traditions, and Indian cultural history. He has guided generations of students and scholars in Vedic and epic studies.

Major Contributions

Goldman is best known as the General Editor and Principal Translator of the monumental Ramayana Translation Project, a multi-volume English translation of Valmiki’s Ramayana, published by Princeton University Press and Motilal Banarsidass.

This project began in the 1970s and has involved a team of leading Indologists. The translation is regarded as one of the most authoritative and scholarly English renderings of the Ramayana, with detailed annotations and introductions.

In addition to the Ramayana project, Goldman has authored and co-authored many important scholarly works on Sanskrit literature, epic traditions, and cultural analysis. His writings often explore themes of dharma, kingship, gender roles, and mythology within Indian texts.
