Description

The Nyayakośa edited by Mahāmahopādhyāya Bhimācārya Jhalakikar was first published as early as in 1874. It then con-sisted of only 267 pager. Later the Kosa was so thoroughly revised and so substantially larged (the number of pages increased nearly fourfold) by the Editor himself that it could be described as an entirely new work. Mahämahopādhyāya Bhimācārya, according to his own testimony, worked on this revision for an average of nine hours every day throughout a period of eight years from 1885 onwards, Ever since its revised and enlarged second edition was published in 1893, the Nyayakośa has been hailed as an indispensable aid for the study of and research in Indian philosophy in general and Nyāyadarśana in particular.

In course of time, the Nyayakośa bad the advantage of further critical revision by aucther distinguished Pandit, Mahā-mahopādhyāya Vasudevaśāstri Abhyankar. This third edition prepared by Mabāmabopādhyāya Vasudevaśāstri was published by the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in 1928. Now, after fifty years, the fourth edition, which, incidentally, is just a reprint of the third edition, of this prestigious publication of the Institute is being issued on the occasion of the celebration of the Institute's Diamond Jubilce.

I have no doubt that all serious students of Nyaya will heartily welcome this long-awaited re-appearance of the Nyaya-kośa.
