Madhyamakasastram volume one consisting of fifteen chapters including four most important important commentaries, viz. Akutobhaya, an auto-commentary by Nagarjuna himself, Madhyamakavṛtti by Buddhapalita, Prajñāpradipavṛtti by Bhāvaviveka or Bhavya. Mulamadhyamakakārikā is the basic text of the Madhyamakas comparable in profundity and importance to Nyayasutra of Gautama and Brahamasutra of Badarāyaṇa. The work is an attempt to reconstruct the lost original Sanskrit from the extant classical Tibetan versions.
The second volume of the Madhyamakaśāstram started with the examination of bondage and release Bandha Mokṣaparīkṣā. The ending chapter of this Sastra is stated as dogmatized views. The middle way doctrine criticises the philosophy of both the Buddhistic and non-Buddhistic conceptions. Acharya Nagarjuna, Aryadeva, Buddhapälita and Candrakirti have supported amont each other. But Bhāvaviveka the founder of Svätantrika school applied his congregationalism views logically.
The autonomously applied theory is Abhyupagamasiddhanta and the logician propounds this to show his excessive intellectualism that aspires to independent thinking. All these remarks have been pointed out in the introduction of the first part. The composite (Samskrita) elements are void from the stand point of Absolute truth. Because they are conditions-just like things magically created (Māyāvat). Things are originated through causes and conditions. The magically created things do not at all exhibit their real nature, hence they are only apparently existent just like things magically created. This example is spoken of conventionally only. These reference from Karatalaratna are enough to make it clear as to how Bhävaviveka has propounded his independent argument.
This work is purely traditional based on Tibetan Dbu-ma agrel ba. We have different brilliant discussions of the Madhyamika thinkers like Nagarjuna, Buddhapalita, Bhavaviveka and Candrakirti etc.
Nagarjuna dna his followers propounded their philosophy of absolute negativism with its undisguised distrust of the empirical testamony of our sense and intellect. The result was an all-round vigorous thought and spirited criticism. Of course the Madhyamika philosophy creates difficulties in under standings. The ciriticism is made that the Madhyamika system is destructive in its function. These works are highly technical and lengthy. It needs a lot of time and deep devotion.
